From the Big Easy to the City of Light
The New Orleans Saints are going international.
And for once, the Black and Gold will make some history before even taking the field.
Sunday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers marks the first NFL regular-season game played in France, with the two teams meeting at Stade de France just outside Paris.
For a franchise with roots tied so closely to French culture, it's a fitting opportunity to showcase New Orleans on one of football's biggest international stages.
Of course, the Saints didn't cross the Atlantic just to enjoy the scenery.
They're coming off a 34-27 victory over the New York Giants and will be looking to build on that performance before heading into their bye week.
At 2-4, New Orleans still has plenty of work to do.
But a victory over Pittsburgh would certainly make the flight home more enjoyable.
Tyler Shough Is Giving Saints Fans Something to Believe In
The Saints' victory over New York provided another encouraging performance from quarterback Tyler Shough.
Shough threw three touchdown passes and added a rushing score as New Orleans rallied from an early 10-0 deficit.
The Saints then reeled off 34 unanswered points, building what appeared to be a comfortable fourth-quarter lead.
Apparently, comfortable isn't something this team is interested in.
The Giants stormed back, cutting the lead to seven and nearly forcing overtime before the Saints defense finally closed the door.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak and offered a glimpse of what this offense can accomplish when everything starts clicking.
New Orleans also rushed for a season-high 175 yards, providing the offensive balance that has been missing during stretches of the season.
Shough doesn't need to do everything himself.
If Alvin Kamara and the rushing attack can keep Pittsburgh honest, the Saints should have opportunities to move the football.
Aaron Rodgers Still Knows How to Win Football Games
Across the field will be a quarterback who has spent years frustrating opposing defenses.
Aaron Rodgers led Pittsburgh to a 26-19 overtime victory over Tampa Bay last Sunday, helping the Steelers overcome a 16-3 fourth-quarter deficit.
The veteran threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns, including the overtime winner to rookie Germie Bernard.
Rodgers may not be the same quarterback who terrorized the NFL during his prime in Green Bay, but his ability to manage a game and deliver in important moments remains dangerous.
Pittsburgh also has receiving threats in DK Metcalf and Bernard, giving the Saints defense plenty to worry about.
And after nearly surrendering a 24-point advantage against New York, New Orleans cannot afford another late-game collapse.
What Will Decide This Game?
Turnovers and offensive consistency should play enormous roles.
Both teams relied on big defensive plays in their Week 6 victories, and neither offense played a flawless game.
The Saints must protect Shough, establish the running game and keep Rodgers from controlling the pace.
Defensively, New Orleans needs another strong performance from Martin Emerson Jr., who recorded two interceptions against the Giants.
Pittsburgh will look to make Shough uncomfortable and force New Orleans into difficult third-down situations.
If the Saints can avoid the offensive droughts that nearly cost them last Sunday, they have a chance to make this a very interesting morning for fans back in Louisiana.
The Bottom Line
Paris will provide the atmosphere.
The players still have to provide the football.
For Pittsburgh, this is an opportunity to improve to 5-2 and keep pace in a competitive AFC North race.
For New Orleans, the stakes are just as important. A victory would give the Saints their first winning streak of the season and some much-needed momentum heading into the bye.
The NFL's first regular-season game in France promises to be memorable.
The Saints would prefer to make it memorable for the right reasons.
And for fans waking up early back home, a little winning football would go nicely with that morning coffee.
