Two Tigers, Two Statements, One Big SEC Matchup

Well, that was quite a Saturday in the Southeastern Conference.

LSU took care of business in Baton Rouge, shutting out Mississippi State 31-0 in a game that was effectively settled before the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Auburn decided to shake up the entire college football landscape by walking into Athens and knocking off No. 1 Georgia, 27-24.

Now, both sets of Tigers meet at Jordan-Hare Stadium with something to prove.

For LSU, the challenge is showing that last weekend's dominant performance was the start of something bigger, rather than another bright spot in an inconsistent season. For Auburn, it's proving that beating the top-ranked team in the country wasn't a one-week miracle.

Both teams are 2-2 in SEC play, and neither can afford to let Saturday's opportunity slip away.

Has LSU Finally Found Its Rhythm?

Sam Leavitt looked about as comfortable as a quarterback can look against Mississippi State.

The LSU signal-caller completed 31 of 38 passes for 289 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. The Tigers moved the ball consistently, and the defense held Mississippi State scoreless.

Not a bad response to losing in overtime at Kentucky the week before.

But let's not get carried away just yet.

Auburn presents an entirely different challenge, particularly at Jordan-Hare Stadium, where an energized home crowd will be expecting another statement victory.

LSU needs to establish its rushing attack, protect the football and avoid letting Auburn dictate the tempo.

Running back Dilin Jones accounted for 142 yards from scrimmage against Mississippi State. If LSU can get similar production on Saturday, Leavitt should have opportunities to attack Auburn through the air.

Auburn's Biggest Weapon Could Cause Problems

Quarterback Byrum Brown is going to require plenty of attention.

Against Georgia, Brown threw for 150 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another 115 yards and a score. His ability to create plays with his legs makes defending Auburn considerably more complicated.

LSU's defense was outstanding against Mississippi State, but keeping Brown contained will be a different assignment.

The Tigers cannot afford to let a broken play turn into a 30-yard gain, especially with the crowd already riding the momentum of last weekend's upset.

Auburn's defense will be looking to create turnovers, too. The Tigers forced three against Georgia, including the late fumble that set up their winning field goal.

The Bottom Line

One team is coming off its most complete performance of the season. The other is coming off one of the biggest upsets in college football.

Something has to give.

LSU appears to have the more productive offense and the stronger defense on paper, but Auburn has already demonstrated what can happen when a talented team gets hot at the right moment.

The question isn't whether LSU has the talent to win at Auburn.

It's whether the Tigers can deliver another complete four-quarter performance away from Baton Rouge.

Saturday should tell us plenty about where both programs are headed.
