McNeese Loses Lippold as the Cowboys Fall to the Vaqueros

In a battle of “Cowboys”, the home team from Texas made more plays and kept McNeese out of the endzone until the 4th quarter in UTRGV’s 27-10 silent slaughter on Saturday.

It’s hard to find a silver lining in this defeat as the Cowboys didn’t seem to be in the game for the entirety of it. 

Vaqueros quarterback Aiden Jakobsohn was only 10 for 20 for 137 yards a touchdown, but it seemed that every time that he needed to make a play, he found it either with his arm or with hsi legs. Jakobsohn also finished with 65 yards on the ground and two tuddys.

It seems that over the course of the first four weeks, McNeese’s defense has been exposed, and it can’t stop the run, giving up another 144 to TJ Dement and 89 yards to Brennan Carroll. Overall, the Vaqueros rushed for 315 yards, and for the second week in a row, the Cowboys gave up over 480 total yards. To put that in perspective, the Cowboys have given up over 400 yards in all three of their losses.

The one bright spot for McNeese might be receiver Curtis Deville, who caught another touchdown while leading the team in receiving with 71 yards, but all that can be for naught as McNeese quarterback Devin Lippold went down with that looked like a hand injury of some kind.

McNeese is now 0-2 in conference play, with a game next week against East Texas A&M at home to try to get their first conference win before heading to Death Valley to see get their payday from LSU, who also needs a get right game after falling to Ole Miss this weekend.

But if Lippold is out for any amount of time, it feels like this offense will be back to starting all over again, going back to Jake Strong who has yet to show the flare that was seen in spring camps.

If Strong can’t take back control of this offense, Viator will have a decision to make if and when Lippold comes back healthy. Either way, it would probably be a smart move to leave him out of next week’s A&M match-up and probably out of LSU as well, but at the same time, what felt like a sure win in the preseason against East Texas A&M is no longer as certain.
